Golf polo shirts are the foundation of all good on-course outfits, making them an essential part of any player's wardrobe.

With a wide selection of fabrics, colours, cuts and patterns to choose from, the GolfMagic editorial team have tracked down and tested offerings from the biggest brands in the game to provide you with all of the information you need to make your next purchase.

From bold prints to strong block colour designs, there is truly something for everyone, with brands like PUMA, G/FORE and Peter Millar all offering outstanding options to wow your playing partners at the monthly medal.

All of the shirts we have chosen were tested over numerous rounds with a number of factors taken into consideration, including style, comfort, breathability and size.

So without further ado, let's get into it.

All of our picks below are independently selected and curated by the editorial team, If you buy a linked product, GolfMagic may earn a fee. Pricing may vary.

Material: 94% Recycled polyester, 6% elastane

Price: £49.99 £34.99

There are a lot of things to love about this PUMA polo. Firstly the design. Perhaps not to every golfer's taste, we loved the white body with blue stems print. It offers just enough variety to keep the shirt interesting without being so bold that you look like you could be turning up to a fancy dress party.

We tested the shirt in a size large, and there was ample space within the cut to move freely without any restriction. I'm 6'1 and relatively slim, so a large could probably accommodate golfers with a larger build than me with ease.

The breathability and comfort on offer from this polo is excellent. As soon as we slipped it on, we loved the feel of the Cloudspun fabric against our skin and it kept us cool and dry throughout the round.

We also really liked the collar design. It's perhaps a touch stiffer than other polo shirts we've tested, but it means that it holds its shape particularly well, especially when worn under a jumper. While only a small detail, if you like a stiff collar, this shirt is the one to go for.

At £34.99, this polo is one of the better value options on this list and would make an excellent addition to any golfers wardrobe.

Cons:

Colours: Danube, Everglade, Pearl Grey

Material: 100% Polyester

One of the heavy hitters in the shirt department, PING have once again created an outstanding polo that should be a staple in any golfer's wardrobe.

The lightweight, breathable fabric offers plenty of stretch throughout the swing, and thanks to the well-tailored cut, we loved the way it fit too. Hanging freely across the shoulders, it's got room in all the right places, so you don't have to worry about bunching or tight spots throughout your round.

The bold split ball design may divide opinion, but we love an adventurous print, so it was a big thumbs up from the GolfMagic team.

Available in a wide range of sizes and colours, the Jay polo is a fantastic golf shirt that can be worn all year round.

Key Features:

Pros:

Cons:

Colours: Seaglass, Fjord

Material: 88% Recycled polyester, 12% elastane

Price: £109

G/FORE is renowned for its in-your-face branding and designs. This shirt, however, is somewhat more understated. We tested the shirt in a cool blue/grey Fjord colour, but it's also available in Seaglass, which is more on the turquoise end of the colour spectrum. The simple single-colour design means that the shirt can be paired with any number of trouser options.

This shirt is the most expensive on this list, but you can really appreciate its quality as soon as you try it on. The fabric is incredibly soft to the touch, and it moves over your skin so delicately it almost doesn't feel like you are wearing anything at all.

The shirt comes in quite a slim cut that we really enjoyed, but we would recommend going up a size to an XL if you have a larger build.

G/FORE's attention to detail is what made this shirt score really highly with us during testing. Both the cutaway collar and embossed logo gave it a premium feel that was unmatched by its competitors.

Key Features:

This shirt is called 'Raise the Bar' for a reason, Peter Millar really does make some of the best polo shirts in the game.

Pulling on the shirt for the first time, we were amazed at just how lightweight the material is. Despite being made from 92% polyester, you could be mistaken for thinking that this shirt was made from pure silk.

We wore a large polo, and it fit true to size, with ample room and stretch to swing freely without fear of the shirt pulling up and becoming untucked.

The stylish print features mini decanters and martini glasses, which is fitting as it could just as easily be worn out for a drink as it could on the course.

Galvin Green is all about quality and performance, and this polo is no different. The Madden is exceptionally breathable and lightweight while offering a complete range of movement throughout the golf swing.

A tailored collar and sewn solid collared cuffs provide nice subtle detailing, while the all-over wave print really appealed to our taste. Galvin Green has taken inspiration from the most beautiful seaside golf courses for the design, and it works nicely in all four different colour options.

The bright and bold design is sure to liven up any fairway around the world, and thanks to the brand's dedication to producing sustainable garments, you can rest assured that you are also limiting your ecological footprint by purchasing this shirt too.

Constructed from one of the most unique fabrics we've tested, the Under Armour Iso Chill Edge is an ideal golf shirt for the modern golfer. The fabric has a slightly textured quality that not only feels great against the skin but also wicks away sweat incredibly effectively.

One of the most breathable shirts we've tested, the Iso-Chill also features an adventurous pattern that may not be to everyone's taste, but for those searching for a vibrant print, it could be just the one.

Fitting true to size, a large is ideal for any golfer over 6ft, and with a little added space around the midriff, it will also provide a flattering fit for the larger golfer.

We instantly took a liking to the cherry blossom-inspired design of this shirt, and the love affair didn't end there.

Throughout testing, the floral polo shirt performed admirably across the board. Lightweight, breathable and super stretchy, this polo is also available in a wide range of colours, making it a very versatile piece that can match a variety of different trouser or short options.

We really liked the slightly slimmer fit, but with plenty of stretch on offer from the fabric, this shirt could suit a golfer of any build.

Crew Clothing is a newcomer to the game of golf, and it's hit the ground running with its range of apparel for 2023. The Smart golf polo has a simple yet stylish design that will undoubtedly resonate with golfers who like to go for a 'less is more' approach to on-course styling.

Putting the shirt on for the first time, we were instantly impressed with how comfortable it was. The fabric offers plenty of stretch, and when tucked into a pair of trousers or shorts, we didn't notice any tugging or pulling during our swing.

Both lightweight and breathable, the Smart shirt would make an excellent choice for either winter or summer golf, and thanks to the broad range of colours on offer, it can be paired with pretty much any pair of shorts or trousers.

Key Features:

Pros:

Cons:

An ideal choice for summer months, this Farah polo provides excellent breathability and moisture-wicking properties.

The subtle Farah 'F' print is understated yet adventurous, and the high-quality buttons and collar round out a sleek and sophisticated construction. Available in three distinct colours, the shirt can be paired with a wide range of legwear and accessories.

We chose to wear a size large, but if you find yourself typically between sizes, we would recommend a medium for a more athletic fit. With plenty of stretch on offer, you can swing freely in this shirt without issue.

One of the best-value golf shirts on the market, the Bandon polo from Stuburt is an ideal choice for those looking to update their golfing wardrobe on a budget.

Available in three colours and six sizes, the Bandon features a minimalistic tonal design that's ideal for golfers who like to keep their on-course styling simple. With a good fit in the sleeves and across the back, you can also rest assured your swing will be unimpeded, thanks to the carefully crafted fit.

Offering a slightly thicker fabric to the other shirts on this list, the Bandon would make an excellent base layer for all-year-round golf, but may be a touch thick for the hottest days of the year.

Fit

Golfers are all different shapes and sizes. Thankfully, golf shirts are too. Finding a shirt to suit your body shape can be the difference between feeling great on the course or feeling like an overpacked sausage. The majority of brands offer a selection of sizes and cuts to suit all different builds, so making sure you find the right one for you is key.

Breathability

Finding a shirt that is highly breathable can completely alter the enjoyment of your round. There's nothing worse than sweat dripping down the inside of your shirt, making you wet and uncomfortable, and there's no need for it either. With a wide range of highly breathable, moisture-wicking shirts listed above, it's time you condemned those sweat-drenched rounds of golf to the history books.

Price

Ranging from anywhere between £25 to £109, there is quite a wide spectrum when it comes to the price of a golf shirt these days. As with most things, the higher the price, the finer the materials, and golf shirts are no different in that respect. If you're a competitive golfer who plays three rounds of golf every week, then investing in a higher-quality shirt might be a smart choice. However, if you like to head out once in a while with your mates for a casual round, then something nearer the lower end of the price scale may be a smarter choice.

Material

While cotton golf shirts are still popular around the world, we would highly recommend buying a shirt that is made from synthetic material like polyester, nylon or a spandex blend. While offering good breathability, cotton soaks up sweat like a sponge, and due to its lack of moisture-wicking properties, it will hold sweat on the inside of the shirt, which will lead to discomfort and odour.

Polyester and nylon, on the other hand, not only wick sweat away with ease but also offer a greater degree of stretch and durability. The synthetic fabrics also retain colour far better than cotton, and due to the crease-resistant properties of the fabrics, you don't have to worry about ironing them either.
